Anesthesia & Surgery

Manning Veterinary Clinic offers a wide range of basic surgical services, from spays and neuters to soft tissue and orthopedic procedures. We mostly handle routine medical and surgical cases, but may refer more complicated cases to specialists if we feel that it would be appropriate for the well-being of your pet. Your pet’s safety and comfort are incredibly important to us.

Equine Care: As with the preventive medical care we provide, we would much prefer to do all we can to prevent the need for surgery. However, there are times when surgery is in the best interest of your horse. Surgeries we perform include castrations, laceration repair and hernia repair. For more specialized surgeries we will provide you with a referral to a specialty centre.

Pre-Surgical Bloodwork

To optimize your pet’s safety, prior to surgery your pet is examined, and pre-surgical blood screens can be performed. Results from pre-surgical blood screens can be used to customize an anesthesia protocol appropriate for your pet.

Anesthesia

Animals under anesthesia are fully monitored 100% of the time by a competent staff member. While your pet is under anesthesia all vital signs are monitored, including blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate. Our veterinarian and staff are dedicated to keeping your pets safe before, during, and after their anesthesia.

Surgery

Our primary focus is on the safety and health of your pet. We understand that the decision to undergo surgery, no matter how minor, can often be difficult. Dr. McCracken and staff are happy to address any concerns you may have if you have any questions about your pet’s pre-op or post-op surgical care, please do not hesitate to call us.

We regularly perform many types of surgeries, including but not limited to:
– spays and neuters
– eye surgery
– foreign body removal
– caesarean sections
– dental surgery
– bladder surgery

Post-Operative Pain Management

In addition, we utilize pain management protocols which aim to prevent pain before it starts and to manage it until your pet is healed. Our first priority is to keep your pet safe and comfortable during and after its procedure. For surgeries we use local anesthetics, NSAIDS (non-steroidal medications) and oral and injectable analgesics to ensure your pet’s complete comfort.
